This work represents Bartoli’s reaction to War. In the end, the young men sent to fight are gone and what remains is in reality skulls fighting each other. The dog was inspired by an article in Newsweek that reported about an adolescent boy who was “drafted” into a South American war, killed almost immediately, and left to die on the sidewalk; he was pictured in the story with a dog eating his anklebone. The crying baby is for the countries which don’t celebrate the birth of a child but grieve its coming into a world with so much pain and sadness.
